4 x Black Love = $25 iTunes Giftcard

I’m feeling extra generous today! I have one $25 iTunes giftcard for someone brave enough to purchase 4 copies (in a single order!) of my book BLACK LOVE: Challenging the Status Quo.

I’ve been close friends with iTunes lately! Here’s my most recent purchases:

  • ZhaneSaturday Night (complete w/ High school flashbacks)
  • Ester Hicks e-books (keeps me inspired on the law of attraction edge)
  • A few songs from Loose Ends (I’m an 80’s baby, okay?)
  • A couple of songs by Raphael Saadiq (don’t sleep on his retro sounds!)

Black Love Testimony: Clement Howard

“I’ve completed reading your book Black Love and I must say those were some of the most thought provoking words I have come across in some time. It is a necessity to be reminded of the importance of spreading love, the need to be more loving with each passing day and that “true love” is encoded in our DNA from birth.  This book has reaffirm this and thank you for it.

The poems are the work of a true artist.

I have since passed your book onto a family member, with the hope it will act as a form of inspiration to them. I will do my best to spread the word about your work and I am hopeful you will get all the support needed.”

But What Would ‘Jesus’ Say?

“Every religion on the planet, and there are so many more than you are even aware of, has the potential of absolute thriving. But when you think that you must prove that you have the only one that is right—and you use your condemnation to push against the others—your condemnation separates you from your own Connection that, before your condemnation, you were finding in your own religion.”

– Abraham (Ester Hicks)

Purchase a Copy of BLACK LOVE for $10!

As I am surrounded by 30 copies of books to be signed for 30 wonderful people, I pondered on how blessed I am to have the support of the community; who has an interest in the message I am sharing. Be Happy When the Price Goes Up!

When we received a letter to introduce new ownership of our apartment community, I knew something was up. When the obnoxious sounds of vacant apartment units being ripped apart, then made anew, I knew something was stirring. Every unit gets brand new fancy windows?! C’mon. When we received the notice that our rent was going UP, I had a brief “What?!” moment, then I chose to entertain this thought – “That means our blessings are going UP too!”

There’s no point of getting bent out of shape about the rising gas prices. You have a car, and you need gas to fill it up (of course this does not happily apply to you “Green” drivers), so why not count on your blessings to increase to keep up with inflation? And for crying out loud, boycotting gas stations for a single day is a waste of time and energy; Obama and his gasoline buddies are somewhere laughing at you. Instead of spreading around emails to rally against the ‘Man’ and his evil gasoline tirade, why not encourage your network that blessings increase as the cost of living increases if you want them to? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain if you make the choice to think AND act this way. I’m not at 100%, but I damn sure remind myself daily of this power. If you think what I’m saying is “unrealistic”, or “metaphysical hogwash”, please keep your distance. The Broke-mentality is like a case of the chickenpox….or the case of cooties. Eww!

Doing Something Different…

It’s overwhelming when your task list looks more like a how-to guide to seek insanity. Let’s not even start on internet distractions (including that Osama madness) that keeps us up loooooong past bedtime. One website link to another….and another…most recent Facebook posts, Twitter, oh my. Raise your hand if you are reading this and have 5 other webpages behind this one (or page tabs for my beloved MAC users).

For all my self-taught folks of the entrepreneur status, have you done so much, and felt like you’ve done nothing at all? Google “productivity”, and you’re thrown in the bowels of blogs, websites, ebooks, Amazon listings for anything and everything productivity advice related. Too much, I say.

So why the constant head-butting with the “too much to handle and don’t know where to start or stop” blues? Me-thinks it’s probably because we are looking for the same information, doing the same sort of things to get things done, same tactics to help us stay motivated. And here’s a thought on motivation: that’s a means to help you do something that you really don’t have the passion or even interest in. Motivational Speakers are to help you stay…..well, motivated. But why does it take someone else to kick you in the backside to get you going? Did you attend a 4 hour long workshop to get you motivated to eat that chilli cheese hot dog or buy that expensive new car? Nope. We do what we desire to do, and we know it! When you start looking for “motivators” to keep you on track (or to get back on), that should be your first clue that you’re losing interest, and may want to investigate if that’s the strategy or avenue of execution for you.

What about Inspiration? It’s a means to give your creative spirit ideas to create, start, or manifest something. A bit different from motivation, yes? Raise your hand if you’ve heard plenty of people say that they need motivation to start a business, and have yet to even brainstorm ideas for one. Raise your hand if you’re one of those people! Now, what happens when they see or read a story of someone who has started their own business despite their shortcomings, obstacles, or personal faults that resonate with their own issues?  Inspiration! And a lot of inspiring people were inspired by someone else.

What’s my point in all this? Not sure, but I think this is my idea: just do something different, read different things, go different places, converse with different people, and let’s see what happens. I need to add this to my task list.

p.s. if this post was even slightly inspiring to you, please purchase my book BLACK LOVE: Challenging the Status Quo!

Inspiration, Shoes, and a Lesson in Customer Service

Yesterday was a creative ‘slump’ for me, as juggling too many things without taking a break can stifle the creative flow at times. I received an email from a fashion accessory artisan who creates work that gives me chills (in a positive context). Excellent source of inspiration. Heard of Peace Images?

After managing inbound/outbound emails, I decided to get outside, get some air, and run some errands. What an amazing choice that was. Here’s the scoop:

I (finally) made the visit to Charli Shoe Boutique in the “Pico Village” (the district between Fairfax and La Brea), and I must say that I am absolutely impressed. Having heard of this store through a Facebook friend’s post a long time ago, I was excited about a Black-owned shoe business that have people posting their praises on their profile status (and you know posting statuses is a sacred act for many).  Ladies, if you’re shoe fan (or your woman is a shoe fan)….GO VISIT CHARLI SHOE BOUTIQUE.

If you saw the shopping bag she handed me (with giftbag tissue and decorative straw ribbon), you’d thought I dropped $1,300 on some 2011 Spring wedges, when actually I only spent $10 on some cute sandals. She added quarters in my parking meter, so that I could visit a new stationary, event planning and gift boutique next door (birthday cards – check!). Amazing customer service and personality, I tell ya. Please patronize her store, and tell her Shay sent you!

First Date Memories

Movies? Nope. Dinner and bowling? Nah. Make-out session in the park? That came at another time.

Ashra Kwesi lecture. The lecture changed my life, and confirmed what my subconscious had been mulling over for quite some time. That was about 3 years and some change ago.

Kwesi doesn’t make regular visits to Los Angeles, so if you’re available this Friday evening, this would be such a great investment of your time. Learn about African Spirituality from a documented and thorough perspective. If you’re brave enough to make this a date night, I’d strongly encourage you to do so. No frills or thrills. Dating should be serious business.

My Contribution to National Poetry Month

It’s like the anticipation of a 4-year old

Standing outside with raised hands

Covered with woolly mittens

Beckoning for that enlarged snowflake

To cut through cold air

And find its warmth on tiny tongue –

Anxious for what’s to come

There is no tomorrow

Only the moment of now

Reluctantly gave up microwaved dreams

For oven-baked goals

No need for beliefs-

Because I KNOW

That I will reap the greatest rewards

That life could ever offer.

Feminine Transitions: Book and Exhibition

When I launched the fundraiser to produce “Black Love: Challenging the Status Quo”, I learned some valuable lessons in Support Network 101. Some unexpected lessons (and supporters), and I even made an acquaintance with a fellow project fundraiser host. I’m so glad to see sistas bringing their ideas and project goals to the forefront. Here’s a project that is currently in the works that I think you should at least check out and support, if you are inclined to do.

Excerpt from Kickstarter:

“Creation, birth, love, pain, joy, new beginnings, new commitments, renewal, transitioning from birth to old age. Feminine Transitions is a picture book that captures the physical changes of females with the passage of time. It is a glimpse into the lives of multiple females from infancy to seniority.”
